Your baby may simply need to move or rotate before their facial features become visible.
Baby Is Covering Their Face
Hands, arms, feet, and even the umbilical cord can temporarily block baby’s face.
You may see adorable little fingers or a hand resting across the nose and mouth instead of the full facial image you were hoping for.

Baby Is Snuggled Against the Placenta

7 Things You Can Try If Your Baby Is Hiding

1. Change Your Position
Rolling slightly onto your side or changing your position may encourage baby to move.
Your sonographer can guide you through different positions during the appointment.
2. Take a Short Walk
Sometimes getting up and walking around for a few minutes can encourage baby to change position.
You may be asked to walk around the studio and return for another look.
3. Give Baby Some Time
Babies don’t follow our schedules!
Sometimes the best approach is simply waiting a few minutes. Baby may stretch, roll, move their hands, or turn their face toward the transducer naturally.
4. Stay Normally Hydrated
Good hydration is important during pregnancy and may help provide favorable conditions for ultrasound imaging.
However, drinking excessive amounts of water immediately before your appointment isn’t a guarantee of clearer images.
5. Schedule at an Appropriate Gestational Age
The ideal timing for a 3D/4D ultrasound depends on what you want to see.
Many families choose approximately 26–32 weeks for detailed facial images. However, every pregnancy is different, and baby’s position remains an important factor.

Not necessarily.
A baby facing away from the transducer, covering their face, or remaining in one position during an elective bonding ultrasound is generally a matter of positioning and timing.
However, an elective 3D/4D ultrasound should not be used to diagnose or rule out a medical problem.
